Local woman, Viola Vasey, celebrates a century of life

GRUNDY CENTER – If you didn’t know her, you would never expect that Viola Vasey had just turned 100 years old earlier this week.

Spry, talkative and in excellent health, Vasey is more active than many people who are 20, even 30, years younger than herself.

Every day when the weather permits, she walks the wooded trail behind Arlington Place, where she has lived for the last year and a half. When it gets too hot or too cold outside, she’ll visit the local YMCA several times a week to use the exercise machines. Many times, she’ll ride five or six miles on a stationary bike.

An avid gardener, Vasey also enjoys tending to the garden behind Arlington Place, where she spends time each day pulling weeds, watering plants, or just getting some fresh air.

“I love to garden,” Vasey says. “I’ve always loved mother nature; I love to get out and be outside. I refuse to just sit inside on a rocking chair, because that’s when you get old. And even though I’m 100, I don’t feel that old – not at all.”

So what’s her secret?

A mix of things, Vasey says.
